The
disease has been recognized since ancient times; it was described by
Hippocrates (460-377 BC) who devised a number of helpful treatments for piles
including the application of warm olive oil, the preparation now known as
suppositories. More recently (1839) it was Sir William Lawrence who first used
the term "hemorrhoids" to describe piles.
What
are the symptoms?
The
most common symptom is bright red blood on your stools or toilet paper.
Sometimes you may see only very small traces of blood. Other symptoms are
itching around the anus and pain in your anal area, which may be worse when you
have a bowel movement. If the piles bleed, you may feel faint or dizzy because
you lose a lot of blood.
What
are the main types of piles?
Internal
hemorrhoids. These are found inside your body, so they can't be seen. They do
not usually cause pain or bleeding. It is only when they become very large that
you may notice them bulging out around the end of your anus when you have a
bowel movement. If they bleed it is usually externally which can be very
painful.
Internal
hemorrhoids are further classified as:
a)
protruding, seen outside the anus but not involving the anal canal;
b) prolapsed, seen inside the anal canal but
still attached to the body at their origin;
c) strangulated, where blood supply is cut off
or obstructed by a hard stool; and
d)
incarcerated, where the pile is trapped inside an anatomical sphincter (the
external anal sphincter or the internal anal sphincter).
External
hemorrhoids. These are found outside your body and can be easily seen. They
cause pain but do not usually bleed. They are sometimes confused with skin
tags, but skin tags do not contain any veins. However, skin tags around the
anus can be mistaken for piles.
External
hemorrhoids are further classified as:
a)
simple - when you have just one at the anal opening; and
b)
complex - when you have more than one pile in the anal region.
Conclusion
In
general, people with piles tend to have a better outlook on life than those who
have other bowel problems because piles are not dangerous or life threatening.
However, it is best if you can prevent them from recurring. This may mean
regular exercise and a change in your diet.
